Turkmen long-eared bat, a species considered rare, recorded for the first time in Uzbekistan

The Turkmen long-eared bat (Plecotus turkmenicus) has been recorded for the first time in Uzbekistan, in the "Southern Ustyurt" National Nature Park. Previously, the species was known only from data collected before 1970 and museum specimens, meaning it had hardly been seen in the wild for 55 years. The discovery was made during an expedition under the One Health in Nature Conservation project, implemented by IUCN with funding from Germany's International Climate Initiative (IKI). In 2025, researchers from Germany, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, led by the Berlin Museum of Natural History, recorded the species in the Karakum Desert near the Uzbek border, suggesting it might also inhabit Uzbekistan.

An ESPN investigation, based on IRS documents and FIFA financial statements, revealed that FIFA President Gianni Infantino received a $1.72 million payment in 2024 from FWC2026, the non-profit organization managing the 2026 World Cup in the US. This payment was made in addition to his FIFA salary of 4.274 million Swiss francs (~$4.86 million), bringing his total income to nearly $6.58 million. The payment was not separately disclosed in FIFA's 2024 annual report, raising questions about transparency, since the FIFA statutes require public disclosure of the president's individual income. FIFA rejects any accusations of violating its statutes, stating it complies with all financial reporting requirements and that the president's salary is set by an independent compensation subcommittee.

EU's methane rules face one-year delay, sparking environmental backlash

The European Commission proposed on Wednesday a one-year delay for importers to show compliance with EU methane rules, giving companies until May 2029 to prove that their supplies meet equivalent EU standards.
