The key facts

  • Tom Cruise stars in Iñárritu's “Digger”, showing in Uzbek cinemas from October 1; some say he could win an Oscar for the role.
  • October releases include “Clayface”, “Heart of the Beast” with Brad Pitt, a new “Street Fighter”, and “De Gaulle. Part 1. Resistance”.
  • Family audiences can see “To Grandma's in the Village. Supermission” and “The Magic Pencil”; horror fans get venomous spiders and Indonesia's cursed bridge.

In October, moviegoers can find a film that interests them at the cinemas. There are films featuring Hollywood's big names, blockbusters based on games and comics, a historical epic, family cartoons, and stories about the relationship between a human and a dog. Horror fans won't be left empty-handed this month either: venomous spiders and Indonesia's cursed bridge await them.

In the latest issue of “Kinotavsiya”, Sarvar Karimov helps you choose films to watch at the cinemas this month.

“Digger”

What happens when three masters of their craft, true meter-level creators, come together in one place? The film “Digger” is born. The film's director is Alejandro González Iñárritu. The cinematographer is Emmanuel Lubezki, and the lead role is played by Tom Cruise. The film has been showing in Uzbekistan's cinemas since October 1.Advertising on "Gazeta"

The film's plot was kept secret from everyone. Even its trailers were unique, quite remarkable. The only information available is that Tom Cruise plays one of the most powerful people in the world, who tries to remedy the consequences of a natural disaster he himself caused, one capable of destroying our planet.

“Yes, film critics received the film poorly, and a lot of criticism was heaped on it. I watched the film yesterday and I liked it. In this film the director used the 'mise en abyme' technique. That is, he embedded another work within the work. How does that work in cinema? There is another plot within the plot. I won't spoil it — see for yourself, because it wasn't in the trailers. I didn't understand it at first either and was a bit confused,” says Sarvar Karimov.

The film is a political satire and resembles Stanley Kubrick's “Dr. Strangelove” . Several Hollywood stars appear in it. For example, John Goodman plays the role of the US President. In addition, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Emma D'Arcy and many other actors and actresses worked in the film.

Tom Cruise, who is currently 65 years old, underwent hours of makeupto play the 65-year-old character Digger. He created the image of Digger Rockwell, a billionaire who loves money, listens to no one but himself, and doesn't love any living creature other than his cat.

“Many are saying Tom Cruise might win an 'Oscar' for this role. It's possible, because Cruise is a very good actor; during his career he has been nominated for this award 4 times, but unfortunately never won. Yes, he has one Oscar, but it's an honorary Oscar given for his overall career in cinema. Because Tom Cruise is not only an actor but also a producer,” says Sarvar Karimov.

The film's director Alejandro González Iñárritu has 5 “Oscars”, and the cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki has 3 “Oscars” (interestingly, he won them consecutively, in 2014, 2015 and 2016, for the films “Gravity”, “Birdman” and “The Revenant”).

“Overall, I really love Alejandro González Iñárritu. Back in my institute days we watched his ‘Trilogy of Death’with great interest. In fact, in the first part of “The Magic Cap”, in the scene where Hoshimjon sits in a hotel watching TV, I used a single frame from his film “Amores perros” . Most people came to know Iñárritu after “Birdman” and “The Revenant” , but we true fans have been devoted to his work for 20 years”.

“Clayface”

James Gunn is expanding the DC universe. Have you seen the “Green Lantern” series?

“This time a full-length film was made, and a new character — Clayface — appeared. James Gunn has a habit of finding characters that were forgotten and making them famous. For example, before the film, no one knew the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. We'll see if it works out this time,” says Sarvar Karimov.

This film, which has body horror elements, was directed by James Watkins.

“I have seen his debut film, ‘Eden Lake’. It was a good film, an old and beloved British slasher. We hope Clayface becomes one of the lucky steps in the plan to pull DC out of crisis. Perhaps there is some plan in James Gunn's head to reform DC and superheroes in general that we don't yet understand. We'll see!”, says Sarvar Karimov.

“Heart of the Beast”

Have you seen “Fury”, the film about tank crews starring Brad Pitt? That film was made by a director named David Ayer. This time he collaborated with Brad Pitt again and made “Heart of the Beast” . The entire film consists of Brad Pitt and a dog.

“To be honest, this film reminded me of our own old beloved films of the 90s. It was truly shot out in the mountains and rocks, not on a green screen. It turned out to be a simple but good film. Watch it — you might even shed a tear at the end. After all, Brad Pitt is Brad Pitt,” says Sarvar Karimov.

“Street Fighter”

Once upon a time, a film called “Street Fighter” starring Jean-Claude Van Damme was made. This film was based on a game, like “Mortal Kombat” . Just as “Mortal Kombat” was recently remade, now this month a new version of “Street Fighter” is coming out.

“In my opinion, this film should be watched right away. If only out of respect for 50 Cent. It is he who plays the Black boxer character from the game named Balrog,” says Sarvar Karimov.

“De Gaulle. Part 1. Resistance”

A two-part historical film telling the life story of the famous French figure General Charles de Gaulle was made in a France-Belgium and US co-production. Currently, the first part of this epic is being shown in our cinemas.

“If you like films about World War II or are interested in history in general, don't miss this film. Let us remind you that in World War II, France was occupied by Nazi Germany in a short time. Charles de Gaulle, displeased by this, founded the patriotic movement ‘Free France’, later liberated his homeland from the fascists, and after some time also became the president of the country. A truly remarkable person — this man's life deserved to be a film, and now we can go to the cinema and watch it,” says Sarvar Karimov.

Family viewing

For family viewing this month, we can recommend a film by Dutch creators called “To Grandma's in the Village. Supermission” . Also, the joint French-Belgian production “The Magic Pencil” is being presented to audiences; in it, a little girl finds a magic pencil in her hands, and whatever is written with it comes true.

Also, a modern 3D adaptation of a Soviet cartoon — “The Adventures of Little Mammoth. Looking for Mom” animated film is also being shown in our cinemas. With children aged 6–7, you can also watch another animated film, a German and Czech production — "Underwater Buddies. Reef Keepers" can be watched.

"The Dog Named Gohan"

Are you a fan of "Hachiko"? Then "The Dog Named Gohan" by Thai filmmakers is for you. "The Dog Named Gohan" The film tells the story of the adventures of a white dog named Gohan; unlike "Hachiko", Gohan will have three owners.

"The Thais are very good at making clips that touch a person's soul and bring them to tears, and we hope the film was shot with the same skill," says Sarvar Karimov.

"Attack"

Presented by A24 studio, "Attack" has a very simple plot. A mother and her daughter fight against evil robots. In short, some run, some chase. If you like attraction films in the horror, sci-fi, action and thriller genres — don't miss it.

"Whale Hunt"

"A new star is shining in the Hollywood sky, and its name is Austin Abrams. Remember that, friends. I first saw this young actor in the film 'Wolfs'. Back then, he didn't get lost in front of two giants — George Clooney and Brad Pitt — which impressed me. This actor truly has talent, and later a number of films were made with his participation," says Sarvar Karimov.

"Verity's Secret Diary, or the Truth" and "Spa Weekend"

"Verity's Secret Diary, or the Truth"— is Anne Hathaway's fifth premiere this year. In this thriller, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, familiar to millennials, play the leading roles. This month also saw the release of "Spa Weekend", a comedy aimed at a female audience, on the big screens.

Horrors

Oscar winner Jessica Chastain plays the lead role in "The Stepmother", which is being shown this month. Another film for horror fans — "Arachnid" — is also coming to the big screens.

"Are you afraid of spiders? Neighbors living in a high-rise building are locked down in quarantine and forced to face thousands of poisonous spiders alone. This happens because one person returns from a trip abroad and, without knowing it, brings a poisonous spider in their bag. The spiders multiply and begin to take over the complex. The government, in order to prevent the spiders from spreading throughout the country, puts the building under quarantine. Doesn't that remind you of anything?" says Sarvar Karimov.

"Final Destination: Bridge No. 13"

For fans of Indonesian horror, this month the film "Tumbal Proyek" (in Uzbek "Project Sacrifice", in Russian "Punkt naznacheniya: Most №13") is being shown. Naturally, this film has nothing to do with the "Final Destination" — "Punkt naznacheniya" franchise.

"The film was translated with this title simply so that more people would come to the cinema. According to the plot, during the construction of a huge bridge, many people die due to unfortunate accidents. But is it really an unfortunate accident, or the trickery of insidious forces?" says Sarvar Karimov.
